Maxeys Model Mile 5K goes virtual

Out of an abundance of caution, the Maxeys Model Mile 5K has been converted into a virtual race, with participants submitting their time to walk or run any 3.1-mile course anywhere in the U.S. between Aug. 8 and Aug. 15.

“We are thrilled that we found a way to hold this race safely, despite the pandemic,” said race organizer Anne Garner. “You may run or walk on a track, a treadmill, in your neighborhood, anywhere – provided the distance is 3.1 miles. We consider this change ideal for the continued welfare of our community, sponsors and participants.”

Garner noted that the virtual race counts toward participation in the Firefly Trail Race Series, the 2020 Black Bag Race Series, and the 2020 Clover Glove Series. Proceeds benefit the Maxeys Firefly Trail Fund, which helps cover the cost of trail amenities such as benches and picnic tables along the city’s portion of the trail.

Here is how the virtual race works: · Sign up at www.Active.com. Registration is $20 for individuals, $60 for a family or group of four, and $20 for “phantom runners” – those who want a shirt and to provide support, but don’t intend to walk or run.

· T-shirts are guaranteed for those who register by Aug. 7 and will be mailed to participants.

· Pick any 3.1-mile course. Because the race is virtual, you can run or walk anywhere. It’s just as easy to compete in California as in Georgia.

· Run or walk your course anytime between 12:01 AM Saturday, Aug. 8, and 5 PM Saturday, Aug. 15. All times are Eastern. · Submit your finish time to http://tiny.cc/MaxeysTimeSubmission before 6 PM EDT on Aug. 15. Finish times submitted after the deadline will not be included in the results.

Classic Race Services will provide virtual finish line management and will post results to www.classiconestop.com, www.classicraceservices.com and www.active.com.

Awards will be mailed to winners three-deep in these categories: overall male and female, masters male and female, and standard age groups from 10-and-under to 75-and-over.

Progress on the Firefly Trail Maxeys Model Mile continues, with volunteers and Oglethorpe County crews clearing brush and improving stormwater management for the approximately 0.4-mile Phase 2 extension of the city’s existing 0.7-mile trail segment. The trail through Maxeys will closely follow the

historic corridor of the Georgia Railroad Athens Branch and will take trail users through downtown Maxeys and beside the city’s historic railroad depot, now being restored by its private owners.

Additional information will be posted on the Maxeys Facebook page. If you have additional questions, please contact Garner at annegar36@windstream.net. You can learn more about the Firefly Trail at www.fireflytrail.com.
