Anticipating Growth, Athens Area Humane Society Welcomes

Two Veterinarians to its Clinical Team

In anticipation of more than doubling the number of dogs and cats it cares for at its state-of-the-art animal clinic at 1030 Mitchell Bridge Road, AAHS welcomes Dr. Simpson and Dr. Varner to its medical team. Both veterinarians will provide spay/neuter procedures, diagnostic services, and wellness examinations and will join AAHS in June.

Dr. Simpson brings an eclectic range of experience in veterinary care, including small animal private practice, surgery, and shelter medicine. For the past three years, Dr. Simpson has been a Veterinarian with Planned PEThood of Georgia, located in Duluth. She is a 2016 graduate of the University of Georgia’s College of Veterinary Medicine.

"We are thrilled to welcome Dr. Simpson to our vet care team," said AAHS CEO Dr. Cheryl McCormick. “She is a talented veterinarian with an exemplary reputation among shelter medicine programs throughout Georgia. Her commitment to providing exceptional care for pet patients aligns with AAHS’s intention to expand access to high quality, affordable veterinary care.”

Dr. Varner is a 2021 graduate of the UGA College of Veterinary Medicine. She is currently an Associate Veterinarian at Clarkesville Veterinary Hospital, where she has developed a passion for preventative care, dentistry, soft tissue surgery, and client education.

Jed Kaylor, Director of Lifesaving Programs and Community Initiatives, states “Dr. Varner embodies AAHS’s dedication to providing compassionate care in partnership with pet parents. She shares our commitment to community-based shelter medicine and believes that everyone deserves access to extraordinary veterinary care for their beloved pet.”

AAHS’s donor-funded animal care facility includes an affordable spay/ neuter surgery center and wellness clinic, pet x-ray center, dental health suite, and an innovative adoption center. It also features a community pet food pantry, crisis foster housing services, and assistance to help keep pet parents and their beloved pets... together.
