Athens, Ga. – Dr. Brian Brewer, a native of Athens and a member of the first class of medical students at the Augusta University/University of Georgia Medical Partnership, is joining Dr. Milene Argo and St. Mary’s Internal Medicine Associates (SIMA), effective June 1.

A board-certified primary care physician, Dr. Brewer comes to SIMA from the University of Georgia Health Center, where he has practiced as a staff physician since January 2020. During his tenure there, he has served as employee occupational health physician coordinator and as postgraduate medical education training coordinator, as well as serving as a clinical assistant professor for the AU/UGA Medical Partnership.

Dr. Brewer became part of local and state history when he enrolled in the first class of the then-new AU/UGA Medical Partnership in Athens, then matched to be part of the first class of the first medical residency program in Athens.

He received “double dog” bachelors’ degrees from UGA, majoring in biology and exercise and sport science. He earned his medical degree from the Medical College of Georgia AU/UGA Medical Partnership in Athens, then completed his medical residency through the AU/UGA Medical Partnership, serving at the program’s host site, St. Mary’s Health Care System. He went on to complete a primary care sports medicine fellowship at the University of Kentucky in Lexington.

Among his awards and honors, Dr. Brewer received the UGA Varsity Football Iron Man Award, was a UGA football senior letterman, was named a Medical College of Georgia Dean’s Summer Research Fellow, and received the AU/UGA Medical Partnership Resident Professionalism/Ethics Award.

At SIMA, Dr. Brewer will provide adult wellness and routine sick care in the office, including ordering tests, diagnosing problems, prescribing medications, and referring patients to specialists when needed. Like Dr. Argo, he works to create a relationship with patients that promotes trust and open communication, regardless of whether the patient has an ordinary cold or a complex chronic condition.
