Dr. Katherine H. Yancey, MD, FACS, a board-certified general surgeon with roots in Athens, has joined Athens General and Colorectal Surgeons (AGCS), part of St. Mary's Medical Group.
As a skilled surgeon with special interests in robotics and abdominal wall reconstruction, Dr. Yancey is able to use leading-edge, minimally invasive techniques for many procedures. Among the most common types of procedures she performs are gastrointestinal surgery including stomach, small bowel, appendix, gallbladder, and colon. Additionally, she performs anti-reflux surgery, hernia surgery, hemorrhoid and anorectal procedures, soft tissue mass excisions, colonoscopy, and upper endoscopy.”
Dr. Yancey comes to St. Mary’s Medical Group from North Carolina. Most recently, she practiced as an associate surgeon with University of North Carolina (UNC) Physicians Network’s Lenoir Memorial Hospital in Kinston. Before that, she provided surgical care with Mission Hospital-Mission Surgery in Asheville and as Locum Tenens with Weatherby Healthcare and CompHealth. She also has extensive experience in teaching, serving in a variety of educational roles with UNC Chapel Hill, Wake Forest University and Campbell University.
Joining AGCS brings Dr. Yancey back to Athens, where she graduated Summa Cum Laude from the University of Georgia with a bachelor’s degree in English and a minor in French. During her time at UGA, she worked as a recreation supervisor at the Ramsey Student Center, a laboratory assistant at the Complex Carbohydrate Research Center, and volunteered at St. Mary’s Hospital.
She went on to earn her medical degree from the University of Tennessee Health Sciences Center College of Medicine in Memphis. She then completed her general surgery internship and residency at Wake Forest Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, where she also served as Administrative Chief Resident in Education. Her education continued at Wake Forest with a transition to practice fellowship/junior faculty year, and a one-year fellowship in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery.
At AGCS, Dr. Yancey joins Drs. Sergio Mejias, Andrew Lawrence, Ryan Katz, Aaron Carr, Brant Parramore, and Graham Mercier, as well as an extensive team of physician assistants and nurse practitioners.
Dr. Yancey is now accepting appointments for surgical consultations at the AGCS main office, located at 1500 Oglethorpe Ave., Suite 2000, Athens. A referral from a primary care physician may be required under some insurance plans. As part of St. Mary's Medical Group, AGCS accepts most major insurance plans and Medicare.
