Athens, GA - Historic Athens, a non-profit organization dedicated to celebrating and conserving the historical and cultural heritage of Athens, is proud to announce the upcoming Historic Athens Preservation Celebration at the Oconee Street School. The event is scheduled to take place on Friday, May 19th, from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and will celebrate the history of Carr’s Hill and commemorate the 54th Annual Historic Athens Preservation Awards.

The Oconee Street School, built in 1908, has been an important part of Athens' history, serving as an elementary school until 1971. After years of neglect, Grahl Construction recognized the building's potential and restored it to its former glory. Today, it serves as a reminder of Athens' rich history and as a testament to the city's commitment to preserving its past.

The Historic Athens Preservation Celebration will offer attendees the opportunity to take self-guided tours of the school, as well as hear presentations from experts on the history of the Carr’s Hill neighborhood, the Oconee Street School, and the structure’s rehabilitation. In addition, attendees will be able to enjoy fresh and flavorful light fare curated by The Expat and a delicious wine selection by The Lark Winespace.

"We are excited to offer the community the chance to experience the history and beauty of the Oconee Street School," said Tommy Valentine, Executive Director of Historic Athens. "This event is a celebration of our city's past, and we are thrilled to have the opportunity to share it with the community."

Tickets for the event are $50, with discounts available for members and sponsors. For more information or to purchase tickets, visit bit.ly/preserveathens23. To become a member or sponsor, visit historicathens.com/join.
