Athens, GA February 23, 2021 – To kick-off the grand reopening of the YWCO pool the YWCO is hosting a Cool Pool Plunge on Saturday, March 6 at 2:00 p.m. The YWCO pool has been closed for six weeks to complete extensive replastering of the pool.  The Cool Pool Plunge will give YWCO members and friends the chance to be the first to jump into the pool and kick-off a new season of swimming at the YWCO.

Throughout the month of February, extensive work was completed on the pool. The bottom of the pool was resurfaced, new drains were installed, ladders into the pool were updated and tile work was restored.  Water fitness class instructors offered “Water to Land” classes to their members.  “We are so excited to welcome back our members to the pool”, said YWCO CEO, Kitty Meyran.  “I believe they are going to be excited to see how beautiful the pool looks and feels.”

Beginning at 2:00 p.m. on March 6 the YWCO pool, 562 Research Drive will be open for brave swimmers to jump into the 60 degree water to celebrate the last phase of the renovations.  The pool heater will be turned on Monday, March 8 and by Thursday, the YWCO will be heated to 84 degrees, ready for YW members to begin their regular class and swim schedule.  Immediately following the Cool Pool Plunge participants will be treated to ice cream from Cool World Ice Cream Shop.  They will receive a Cool Pool Plunge certificate acknowledging their participation in the celebration and bragging rights that they survived their dip in the cold waters.

The cost for participation in the Cool Pool Plunge is $10 with the proceeds going toward the YWCO aquatics programs.   Pre-registration is not required.  This event kicks-off the spring swim season at the YWCO.  Water fitness and water arthritis classes begin on March15 as do regular pool hours which include adult lap swim and open swim times.  The YWCO offers private and group swim lessons for all ages from parents and tots to adults.  Spring swim lessons begin March 16. Registration is online at https://www.ywco.org/learn-to-swim. Beginning in April lifeguard training is available for those interested in becoming lifeguards for the summer swim season.  Partnering with Athens Bulldog Swim Club, Extra Special People, Dolphin Dive and area high schools, the YWCO pool also offers practice space and rentals.  Information on all of these programs can be found on the YWCO website: www.ywco.org.
